money & budget

Municipal budgets determine how Township services and projects are funded and how property tax dollars and other revenues are allocated. Severn Explained breaks down the numbers in plain language and explains what Council has approved, where the money is coming from and what it is intended to fund.

Understanding the Township Budget

A budget is a plan for expected revenues and expenditures. An amount included in a budget does not necessarily mean that the money has already been spent. Severn Explained will identify the difference between budgeted amounts, approved expenditures, contracts and actual spending whenever that information is available.

Where does the money go?

Township spending can include roads and infrastructure, water and wastewater services, recreation, parks, facilities, planning and development, fire and emergency services, municipal administration and other services provided by the Township.

Following the Numbers

When a project or major expenditure is discussed, Severn Explained will identify the amount being proposed or approved, the intended source of funding and, where available, the actual cost. Figures will be linked to Township budgets, staff reports, Council decisions, contracts or other primary sources.
